Saints Canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009

Saint Geltrude Comensoli

Geltrude Comensoli - In 1939 Pius XII authorized the preliminary investigation of the Apostolic Process in the Cause of Mother Geltrude. On April 26, 1961, the General Congregation of the then Congregation of Sacred Rites was held in the presence of Pope John XXIII. His Holiness promulgated the Decree on the heroic virtuous life experienced by Mother Geltrude Comensoli, who was then given the title of “Venerable”. On October 1, 1989, Pope John Paul II declared her a Blessed Soul. On April 26, 2009 Pope Benedict XVI entered her on the register of Saints.

Saint Bernardo Tolomei

Bernardo Tolomei - Founded the Benedictine Congregation of Santa Maria di Monte Oliveto. Tolomei was praised by Pope Benedict during the ceremonies last Sunday “as an authentic martyr of charity”. On Sunday April 26, 2009 he was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI.

Saint Nuno De Santa Maria Álvares Pereira

Nuno De Santa Maria Álvares Pereira - Upon his death in 1431 his followers immediately petitioned for sainthood. In 1918 Pope Benedict XV recognized Brother Nuno as Blessed. On Sunday April 26, 2009 he was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI.

Catarina Volpicelli

Catarina Volpicelli - Founded the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart. The new saint was beatified on April 29, 2001 by His Holiness John Paul II and canonized on April 26, 2009 by His Holiness Benedict XVI.

Saint Arcangelo Tadini

Arcangelo Tadini - Founded the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Worker House of Nazereth. Dedicated his life to conditions of workers. Cannonized by Pope Benedict XVI on April 26, 2009
